My first impression of the book was good and I thought it was going to be very funny because of all the reviews. It was classified as humor and all the reviews said it was very funny. When I started to read the book, the first part was very funny but then it escalated. It became less funny and more informative. The book taught me a lot about words and where they came from. I would recommend this book to 8-11 year olds. This would be a good book to read in english class if you are learning about the origin of words. Overall it was a good book but it was not that funny.
This chapter was set 10 years in the future. Nick is 21 and in college. The fund that Nick's dad set up for Nick was finally his so he was extremely rich. He bought himself some video games and gave some of his money to his parents because they have always wanted to travel. One day, Nick received a package with three things in the box. One was a new dictionary, a short hand-written note and a white envelope. In the envelope was the letter she wrote to nick 10 years ago and it said that she supported him the whole time. The handwritten note said turn to page 541 of the dictionary were the word frindle was. One afternoon a few months later, Mrs. Granger found an envelope and a gift bag on her doorstep. In the envelope she found one million dollars and in the gift bag, there was a golden fountain pen from Nick. This chapter was the last chapter so it was not that funny.
Through all this frindle commotion, Nick lost his need to be a trouble maker. He looked the same, Just felt different. He still had ideas, like serving better food at lunch but he was scared to get in trouble. He turned into a quiet boy. He still wondered about the letter than Mrs. Granger said she would send to him when the battle of the words was all over so he went to her house. She told him that she had not forgotten about it yet but she did tell him that he should still be himself. This chapter was not funny but it was heart warming because it showed that Mrs. Granger cared about Nick.
Soon, the hype of the word frindle dies down and people were starting to use it as a normal word. But that was only in Westfeild. In the rest of the United States, things were only beginning. There was a sign added to the road to Westfeild that said: "home of the original frindle." This chapter was not funny because it is the beginning of the outro part where it all slows down to the end.
Frindle was getting bigger and bigger by the day. Nick was being noticed everywhere he went. Bud lawrence was a wealthy business man who when he saw the word frindle, did not waste a second making frindle merchandise. Pretty soon, the word was on the national news. Frindles were selling really fast and Bud knew that he was going to make a lot of money off of this pen so he made a deal with Nick's dad. Nick would get 30% of the profit. Nick's dad decided to set up a college fund. This chapter was not that funny but it was very interesting because it talked a lot about stocks and profit, which we are doing in homeroom right now.
Judy Morgan published her story and the Westfeild Gazette was delivered to over 12000 houses. Everything in the article was true but Judy made the story more tense and dramatic. Everybody was wondering how she got all the information for her story! This chapter like the one before, was not that funny because it was mostly about Judy's story.
One day, a woman came to school. Her name was Judy Morgan and she was a reporter from the Westfield Gazzette. She was from one of the small neighboring towns and heard about this whole frindle story so she decided to come and investigate. She first saw a sign made by Mrs. Granger about not using frindle, then she met Mrs. Chatham, then she was asking questions to a group of students about the word frindle. Later that week, she received an envelope that contained the fifth grade picture in it. This chapter was not very funny either because it was just about getting the word out there.
Mrs. Chatham visited Nick's parents and told them about what was happening. She explained that every kid was using the word frindle and that the students were not respecting the teachers. Nick's mother stood up for Nick by saying why are the teachers making such a big deal out of this? Mrs. Chatham continued on by saying that the children have little respect. Nick's dad agreed with Nick's mom. After Mrs. Chatham left, Nick's parents sat Nick down and had a chat with him about being respectful to his teachers. This chapter was not very funny because it was mostly about his parents trying to discipline him.
In this chapter, the word Frindle was starting to spread. It was picture day at Lincoln elementary and when the photographer said "say cheese!" everybody said "frindle!" and held up a pen. The teachers were not happy about this. Mrs granger was so mad about this that she made anybody who said the word, stay in after school. This only mad things worse. Every kid was using it so she made almost every kid in the fifth grade stay in. Mrs. Granger decided to have a meeting with Nick. Mrs Granger told him that as soon as this frindle thing was over, she would send him a letter. The letter was already written and signed, just waiting to be mailed. The funniest part of this chapter was when it was picture day and they all held up frindles. I found this funny because the kids were disobeying the rules of the teachers but not in such a manner that they needed to get mad about it.
In this chapter, they were in Language arts class. Right after the bell rang, Nick said: "Mrs. Granger, I forgot my frindle". His friend john went along with it and said: "I have one you can borrow!" They did this on purpose to show the class what the word Frindle meant. After class, Mrs. Granger asked Nick to stay behind. She told Nick that she does not want her class to be disrupted again. Nick kept referring to his pen as a frindle. Mrs. Granger told nick he could go. The funniest part of this chapter was when Nick and John were making a big deal of the word frindle. This was funny because they were trying to make a scene on purpose. "'Mrs. Granger, I forgot my frindle.' Sitting three rows away, John blurted out, 'I have an extra one you can borrow, Nick.' Then John made a big show of looking for something in his backpack. 'I think I have an extra frindle, I mean, I told my mom to get me three or four. I’m sure I had an extra frindle in here yesterday, but I must have taken it . . . wait . . . oh yeah, here it is.' And then John made a big show of throwing it over to Nick, and Nick missed it on purpose. Then he made a big show of finding it." Chapter 7
